World-Builders, Shapeshifters

Curator: Erin Szikora

Dreaming of the worlds we want to live in allows us to take the first steps towards creating them. How can we use what we know today to collectively envision a better world for tomorrow? When you imagine the future, what do you hope to change about the past?

Interconnected Beings Suspended in Time

On four platforms stand four life-sized cornhusk dolls representing different stages of Shapwaykeesic-Loft’s life to date.

On the far left, her youngest self, and on the far right, the self she hopes she is becoming. In Haudenosaunee agricultural systems, corn is a staple crop. Inter-planted with beans and squash, the “three sisters” are an incredibly important component of Haudenosaunee cultural identity.

Historically, cornhusks were saved all summer to be used in doll and basket making throughout the winter. The dolls are made faceless so that the child playing with them can reflect their own personality and story onto them.

By using contemporary silhouettes adorned with traditional motifs and materials, Shapwaykeesic-Loft looks back in order to look ahead; fashioning a future for herself that is uniquely and extravagantly Kanien’kehá:ka.

Designing the Revolution

Artists: Nina Lee Aquino, Nishina Loft, River Oliveira

Our piece is a 360° immersive experience of how the revolution could look, feel, and sound. A microcosm of what the future holds. The shattering of old ideas, the sharing of our collective griefs, hopes, and dreams, building a world in technicolour from the ashes.
